Callinex Doubles Size of Pine Bay Project with Acquisition of Highly Prospective Exploration Land Package in Manitoba https://breakingheadline.lighting/callinex-doubles-size-of-pine-bay-project-with-acquisition-of-highly-prospective-exploration-land-package-in-manitoba-2/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/callinex-doubles-size-of-pine-bay-project-with-acquisition-of-highly-prospective-exploration-land-package-in-manitoba-2/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 12:21:19 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/callinex-doubles-size-of-pine-bay-project-with-acquisition-of-highly-prospective-exploration-land-package-in-manitoba-2/

Highlights:

  • Acquired and staked ground consolidates the largest felsic volcanic rock package in the Flin Flon Greenstone Belt, the host rock for the majority of the historic copper/gold/zinc/silver VMS mines in the Flin Flon and Snow Lake regions;
  • Newly acquired ground hosts one gold deposit and a relatively recently interpreted growth fault corridor known to control and host at least two historic near-surface copper-rich VMS deposits and numerous Cu-Zn VMS occurrences;
  • Growth fault corridor that hosts those two historic resources is similar to a parallel growth fault corridor that hosts Rainbow, Pine Bay, Descendent and other deposits 3km to the south; and
  • Ground has been subject to limited very shallow exploration drilling on limited portions of the large land package.

VANCOUVER, BC, May 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ – Callinex Mines Inc. (the “Company” or “Callinex”) (TSXV: CNX) (OTCQX: CLLXF) is pleased to announce it has signed an option agreement with Voyageur Mineral Explorers Corp. (“Voyageur”) to acquire a 100% interest in the Alberts Lake Project and staked additional claims to grow the Company’s flagship 100% owned Pine Bay Project (the “Project”) located in the Flin Flon Mining District of Manitoba (Flin Flon District Overview Map). Callinex’s Pine Bay Project now encompasses over 11,859 hectares (approximately 120 square kilometers) of highly prospective exploration ground and completely consolidates the Baker Patton Felsic Volcanic Complex (“Baker Patton”) and another large felsic package known as the Alberts Lake Felsic Volcanic Complex (Pine Bay Project Geology). Combined, the Baker Patton and Alberts Felsic Complex contains the largest and most highly altered accumulations of surface exposed felsic volcanic rocks in the Flin Flon region. Felsic volcanic rocks also host almost all of the main copper, gold, silver and zinc bearing Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide (“VMS”) deposits and mines discovered within the Flin Flon Greenstone Belt (Flin Flon Regional Geology).

Max Porterfield, President and CEO, stated, “Consolidating this highly prospective land package in the Flin Flon Greenstone belt is a significant achievement for Callinex.  As we continue to advance our high-grade copper discoveries to the south, we are eager to apply our proven exploration model on key high-grade copper and gold targets within the newly acquired ground.”

Jim Pickell, a member of Callinex’s technical team, added, “I’m thrilled to have a fresh new opportunity to help unravel the mineral potential of the Baker Patton Felsic Volcanic Centre and to further unlock its exceptional VMS endowment known to be associated with intense geochemical alteration zones confined within major transverse growth fault corridors spaced at three-kilometre intervals along strike. This is particularly true of the prospective northernmost fault corridor, first identified by Callinex in 2015 and occurring in an area that the company couldn’t access at that time. This northernmost interpreted fault corridor has really only seen a rather limited number of mostly shallow drill holes focussed on the historic Amulet and Leo Lake VMS occurrences. Given Callinex’s freshly acquired Pine Bay geological, geochemical and geophysical perspectives that were used to discover the Rainbow, Alchemist and Descendent VMS deposits along the adjacent fault corridor to the south, it’s an entirely new exploration game for Callinex.”

The Alberts Lake Project encompasses 5,064 hectares of contiguous ground to the north of the existing Pine Bay Project boundary. The land package contains several prospects hosting both copper-zinc-gold-silver bearing VMS mineralization as well vein-hosted gold-silver. More recently, vein-hosted gold has been targeted for exploration near the Albert’s Lake Gold Prospect and along the strike extent of the structure, the Albert’s Lake Shear, hosting mineralization that has been traced at surface and by drilling for over 2km of strike extent.

VMS discoveries of note within the Flin Flon – Snow Lake Greenstone Belt have often been made by drilling considerably down-plunge from small, precious and base metal-rich VMS lenses directly associated with interpreted growth fault corridors that ultimately controlled the discharge of VMS systems at regular intervals (often two kilometres or less) down those plunge lines, ultimately leading to much larger and economically viable deposits.  For example, two near-surface, rather small but high-grade VMS lenses, the “Dan” and “Owens” lenses, were the small precursors for the much larger 25+ million tonne 777 deposits discovered much deeper down-plunge. It’s also worth noting that the Company’s most recent discovery, the Descendent VMS, is similarly located significantly down-plunge from the near-surface high-grade Cabin VMS deposit. In any event, historic near-surface mineralization will be a main focus for initial target generation on the newly acquired land package.

Leo Lake Copper VMS Deposit

While the Leo Lake area has been known for several decades for its anomalous levels of VMS mineralization, the presence of significant mineralization within the Leo Lake deposit was not identified until 1991. In March of that year, Granges drilled hole AL-113 which intersected 8.38% Cu and 0.96% Zn over 2.13m. In 1997, Aur Resources compiled all the previous drilling information, creating sections and level plans. The results indicated that the Leo Lake deposit was made of four lenses of VMS mineralization (known as the 21, 22, 23 and 24 lenses). Aur Resources generated a historical “geologically inferred mineral inventory” for the four lenses, based on a reinterpretation of the Granges drilling, of 192,292 t (short tons) grading 2.29% copper and 0.91% zinc (see “Historical Resource Estimate” disclosure below).

In 1998, Aur drilled (DDH 98-LW-18) into a new massive sulphide lens, below the 23 and 24 zones which they termed the 159 Corridor, intersecting the zone with four holes. Drilling intercepts into the 159 Corridor include 1.52m grading 3.13% Cu, 10.46% Zn, 10.4 g/t Ag and 1.28 g/t Au, 1.46m of 2.56% Cu, 0.78 g/t Au and 11.58m of 1.21% Cu. Subsequently, in 1999, three holes were drilled to target the 159 horizon and intersected narrow widths of modest grades.

Alberts Lake Gold Deposit

The Albert’s Lake Gold deposit is located along the Alberts Lake shear zone northwest of Leo Lake. It is characterized by the presence of quartz veins in strongly altered, sheared and pyritic gabbro. The veins are composed predominantly of quartz with very minor iron-carbonate.

The largest of the gold prospects within the Alberts Lake Gold deposit has 500 meters of strike length and a vertical extent of 300 meters. In the late 1980s, drilling by the previous operators intersected significant gold grades, including high-grade intercepts, as follows:

  • 276.20 g/t Au and 7.60 g/t Ag over 1.2m (including 659.9 g/t Au over 0.5m) (AL-16)
  • 16.75 g/t Au and 29.48 g/t Ag over 5.5m (AL-40)
  • 34.77 g/t Au and 11.73 g/t Ag over 1.8m (including 195.0 g/t Au over 0.3m) (AL-57)
  • 39.95 g/t Au and 22.65 g/t Ag over 1.0m (AL-58)
  • 32.81 g/t Au and 60.53 g/t Ag over 1.2m (AL-85)
  • 3.46 g/t Au over 27.9 m (including 12.19 g/t Au and 33.5 g/t Ag over 4.5 m) (AL-11-57TW)
  • 1.02 g/t Au over 51.5 m (including 6.82 g/t Au and 14.0 g/t Ag over 2.85 m) (AL-11-61BTW)
  • 1.39 g/t Au over 30.9 m (including 5.83 g/t Au and 10.5 g/t Ag over 2.2 m) (AL-11-40TW)
  • 1.14 g/t Au over 26.4 m (includes 4.55 g/t Au and 7.1 g/t Ag over 1.85 m) (AL-11-72TW)

Historical assay information obtained from Geological Reports prepared by Granges, Aur Resources Inc. and Copper Reef Mining Corporation.

Amulet VMS Deposit

The near surface Amulet VMS deposit has not been explored at depth and previous drilling results include:

  • 5.06m at 1.43% Cu, 0.42 g/t Au and 3.84 g/t Ag (Amulet-2)
  • 4.26m at 3.2% Zn, 0.42 g/t Au and 0.42 g/t Ag (Amulet-6)
  • 5.33m at 1.43% Cu, 0.61 g/t Au and 1.97 g/t Ag (Amulet-11)
  • 0.79m at 2.38% Cu, 4.5% Zn, 1.37 g/t Au and 24.59 g/t Ag (Amulet-15)

The largest proportion of work carried out in the Amulet Lake area was done by Hudbay between 1945-53 during which time 61 drill holes tested several targets. Subsequent exploration by Guggenheim Exp. (1969-72) and Granges Exploration (1980-84) tested specific targets (total 7 drill holes). The historic Amulet deposit hosts three small VMS lenses. The horizon that hosts Amulet has also been explored by trenching and an adit in addition to the above drilling. The Amulet Lake deposit is interpreted to occur three kilometres to the northeast along strike from the Company’s Rainbow Deposit and sitting within the exact same felsic volcanic stratigraphy.

Financial Terms

Under the terms of the option agreement, Callinex will acquire a 100% interest in the Alberts Lake Project by making the following share issuances to Voyageur:

  • $75,000 of common shares on the date of TSX Venture Exchange acceptance;
  • $150,000 of common shares on the first anniversary;
  • $150,000 of common shares on the second anniversary;
  • $150,000 of common shares on the third anniversary;
  • $150,000 of common shares on the fourth anniversary.

Upon Callinex acquiring a 100% interest in the Alberts Lake Project, Voyageur will be granted a 1.5% net smelter return royalty, of which 0.5% may be repurchased with a one time payment of $500,000.  A portion of the claims are subject to a historical back-in right as well as an underlying net profit royalty.

This transaction is subject to the approval of the TSX Venture Exchange.

J.J. O’Donnell, P.Geo, a qualified person under National Instrument 43-101, has reviewed and approved the technical information in this news release.  The historical assay information was reviewed from historical geological reports filed by the previous operators of the Alberts Lake Property.

LONDON (AP) — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can appeal extradition to the United States on espionage charges, a London court ruled Monday — a decision that is likely to further drag out what is already a long legal saga was.

LONDON (AP) — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can appeal extradition to the United States on espionage charges, a London court ruled Monday — a decision that is likely to further drag out what is already a long legal saga was.

Supreme Court justices Victoria Sharp and Jeremy Johnson said Assange had grounds to challenge the British government's extradition order.

Assange, 52, was charged with 17 espionage charges and one count of computer misuse for posting a trove of classified US documents on his website nearly 15 years ago.

His supporters cheered and applauded outside the court as they learned of the decision from inside the Royal Courts of Justice.

The Australian computer expert has spent the last five years in a maximum security British prison after seeking refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years. The WikiLeaks founder was not in court to witness the debate over his fate. His lawyer said he did not appear for health reasons.

Lawyers for Assange argued on Monday that the US had given “manifestly inadequate” assurances that the WikiLeaks founder would enjoy free press protection if extradited to the US

Lawyer Edward Fitzgerald said prosecutors had failed to guarantee that Assange, who is an Australian citizen and claims protection as a journalist for publishing US classified information, could rely on the press protections of the First Amendment to the US Constitution.

“The real question is whether sufficient security was provided to eliminate the actual risk identified by the court,” Fitzgerald said. “It is submitted that adequate assurance was not provided.”

American prosecutors allege that Assange encouraged and assisted U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning in stealing diplomatic cables and military files published by WikiLeaks.

Assange's lawyers argued that he was a journalist who exposed US military misconduct in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sending him to the United States, it said, would expose him to politically motivated prosecution and risk a “blatant denial of justice.”

The U.S. government says Assange's actions went far beyond that of a journalist gathering information and amounted to an attempt to solicit, steal and indiscriminately publish confidential government documents.

In March, the two Supreme Court justices rejected most of Assange's arguments but said he could take his case to the appeals court unless the US guaranteed that he would not face the death penalty if extradited and that he would face the same Protection of freedom of expression as an American citizen would enjoy.

The court said that if Assange could not invoke the First Amendment, his extradition would likely be incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights, which also provides for freedom of expression and media protection.

The US has given these assurances, but Assange's legal team and supporters argue that they are not good enough to send him to the US federal court system because the First Amendment promises have not been fulfilled. The US said Assange could try to invoke the amendment, but it would be up to a judge to decide whether he could.

Attorney James Lewis, representing the United States, said Assange's conduct was “simply not protected” by the First Amendment.

“No one, U.S. citizen or foreign citizen, has the right to invoke the First Amendment to publish illegally obtained national defense information that names innocent sources, as doing so will cause serious and imminent harm There is a risk of harm,” Lewis said.

Some held a large white banner directed at President Joe Biden and exhorted: “Let him go, Joe.”

Assange's lawyers say he could face up to 175 years in prison if convicted, although American authorities have said any sentence would likely be much shorter.

Assange's family and supporters say his physical and mental health has suffered during more than a decade of legal battles, including seven years he spent in the Ecuadorian embassy in London from 2012 to 2019. He spent the last five years in a British maximum security prison.

Commuters emerging from a subway stop near the courthouse couldn't miss a large sign with Assange's photo and the words “Publication is not a crime.” “War crimes are war crimes.” Numerous supporters gathered in front of the neo-Gothic Royal Courts of Justice and chanted “Freedom for Julian Assange” and “Freedom of the press, freedom for Assange”.

Biden said last month he was considering a request from Australia to drop the case and allow Assange to return to his home country.

Officials did not provide further details, but Stella Assange said it was “a good sign” and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the comment was encouraging.

There are concerns that PA will not be eligible for an expanded loan forgiveness program https://breakingheadline.lighting/there-are-concerns-that-pa-will-not-be-eligible-for-an-expanded-loan-forgiveness-program/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/there-are-concerns-that-pa-will-not-be-eligible-for-an-expanded-loan-forgiveness-program/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 12:19:23 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/there-are-concerns-that-pa-will-not-be-eligible-for-an-expanded-loan-forgiveness-program/

According to the 2021 census, Prince Albert has a population of just over 37,000 residents, which automatically disqualifies the country from participating in the loan forgiveness program.

However, CASW argues that Prince Albert is eligible because it serves as a gateway community to many rural and remote communities.

“As a social worker based in Prince Albert, you may be driving a few hours each day to reach clients who live in the far north and very remote areas,” said Sally Guy, director of policy.

Guy added that CASW has already had three meetings with the federal Ministry of Economic and Social Development, which oversees the loan forgiveness program.

The ministry said there will be public consultations on eligibility requirements soon, although dates have yet to be determined.

As part of these discussions, Guy hopes that the federal government will look at communities holistically.

“We understand that there needs to be some structure and that they are using that 30,000 population as a measure of community size, which is fine,” she said. “But let’s use this as a start and bring in some metrics for extenuating circumstances or factors.”

These factors include whether it is a Northern Canadian community, how spread out the area is, and whether there is a large Indigenous population that Indigenous social workers and clients would benefit from if social workers were incentivized to remain there or to move there.

Beaonca Meier is a registered social worker in Prince Albert who she spoke to paNOW about their concerns about eligibility for debt relief.

She agrees with what the CASW says about Prince Albert and why it should be considered for the loan forgiveness program.

“Prince Albert serves so many communities in northern Saskatchewan that it is arguably considered remote from other major cities due to its geographic location,” she said. “There are a disproportionate number of social problems here and a chronic shortage of health professionals.”

Of greater concern to Meier is the possibility that fewer people would move to Prince Albert to become social workers and that many people would move to larger centers or other communities that would be eligible for the loan forgiveness benefits.

“I am concerned that this could be detrimental to our community, which already struggles with a disproportionate number of social issues, in part due to its unique location as a gateway to the north,” she said.

“That doesn’t mean Prince Albert will definitely be included in the program or not, but at this point we won’t really know for sure until the federal government decides to share that information with us.”

Meier has already shared these concerns with CASW, who told her they will continue to advocate for social workers like her.

Guy said they have been pushing for a loan forgiveness program since 2016 and are excited to see these benefits appear in the federal budget.

Eligibility for the program is based on the zip code in which a worker practices, not necessarily where they live, but Guy acknowledged those details are still being discussed.

“Maybe they live in Prince Albert, but in reality they are seeing customers in this zip code, this zip code and this zip code. Is it possible to enter the zip codes of these customers because that’s where the real work happens,” she said.

Through all of this, Guy said she feels encouraged that the Government is taking steps to ensure health and social care workers in rural and remote areas receive the services they need.

I do think they don't want unintended political consequences, they don't want to create a situation where they're actually encouraging more people to go to larger areas like Saskatoon or Regina, which I think is already a problem for places like Prince Albert “, she said. “So those are the things we will be keeping an eye on… at the forefront of our discussions with the minister's office.

paNOW has asked the Ministry of Economic and Social Development for comment and is awaiting a response.

Taylor Ruck (Kelowna, BC)
Rebecca Smith (Red Deer, Alta.)
Blake Tierney (Saskatoon, Sask.)
Lorne Wigginton (Calgary, Alta.)
Ingrid Wilm (Calgary, Alta.)
Kelsey Wog (Winnipeg, Man.)

The athletes were selected to Team Canada based on their performances at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Swimming Trials presented by Bell, held May 13-19 at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. To be nominated for an individual competition, swimmers had to achieve the Olympic qualifying time in that competition and finish in the top two at the trials. Canada also qualified for all seven relay events, so there are several athletes who will fulfill their Olympic dreams as members of these teams.

Seventeen-year-old Summer McIntosh has qualified for five individual events and has been considered for multiple relays. She made her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 as the youngest athlete on Team Canada. Since then, she has won more gold medals – four – than any Canadian swimmer ever at the World Swimming Championships, becoming back-to-back world champions in the women's 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley in 2022 and 2023. McIntosh improved her own world record in the 400m IM, shaving 1.5 seconds off the time she set last year. This time of 4:24.38 is almost two seconds faster than any other woman in the event.

“I’m pretty happy that I was able to qualify for my top five events, so I’m really looking forward to the trip to Paris,” said McIntosh. “I think it will be a great meet, not only for me but for the entire Team Canada. I was just watching Josh [Liendo who just swam a Canadian record moments before] and it gave me a lot of motivation.”

Maggie Mac Neil, who won Olympic gold in the women's 100m butterfly at Tokyo 2020, will have the chance to defend her title in the event and will be joined by Mary-Sophie Harvey, who will have the opportunity to compete in her first individual Olympic events after taking part in the 4x200m freestyle relay at Tokyo 2020.

Kylie Masse, a four-time Olympic medalist, will make her third Olympic appearance at Paris 2024 after posting some of the fastest times in the women's 100m and 200m backstroke trials this year world qualified. She will be supported in the 100m backstroke by Ingrid Wilm, who will make her Olympic debut as a world bronze medalist at the 2024 World Championships.

“I am motivated by my teammates, my national team mates and my coaches. I am motivated by my competitors in Canada and around the world,” said Masse. “I think every day brings a different motivation, sometimes it's just the motivation to get through the week and sometimes it's a bigger motivation. Like everything in life, I think it’s just about continuing to show up and being disciplined in what I do, being disciplined in the skills I’m working on and trying to perfect every detail.”

“There are a few of us now who have been on some Olympic teams, so it's also a blessing to be there with people who have done it before and to be there with fresh, excited new faces,” she added added. “I hope to just be there for everyone, in any way I can, to support them and help them on their Olympic journey to greatness.”

Canada's most decorated Olympian of all time, Penny Oleksiak, is heading into her third Olympics after a difficult few years in which she overcame multiple injuries, including knee surgery just four months before the trials. Now 23, Oleksiak has developed tremendously since he was 16, when he became the first Canadian athlete ever to win four medals at an Olympics in Rio 2016.

While members of the women's team won Team Canada's 12 total Olympic swimming medals at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, the Canadian men have continued to improve and are looking to take the next step towards the Olympic podium. Josh Liendo won bronze medals in the men's 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships. He then improved to silver in the 100m butterfly at the 2023 World Championships.

Last February, Finlay Knox became the first Canadian in 17 years to win a gold medal at the World Aquatics Championships after breaking through in the men's 200m IM. Both men were part of a fast 100m freestyle final at the trials, raising hopes of a possible podium finish in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay. Liendo and Yuri Kisil, the runner-up in the 100m freestyle at the Trials, contributed to a fourth-place finish in the event at Tokyo 2020.

“At the last Olympics my goal was to get to the final and make it to the semi-finals. Now it's obviously a challenge for me to be in this final. Once you get to the final, everyone is aiming for a podium, so that's my mindset at the moment, I want to be at the top with the best,” Liendo said after securing his Olympic spot in the 100m freestyle.

First-time Olympic team members include Tristan Jankovics and Jeremy Bagshaw, who are at opposite ends of their swimming careers. Jankovics, 20, became the first Canadian to qualify for the men's 400m IM since London 2012. Bagshaw, who narrowly missed the last two Olympic teams, will compete in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay shortly before he retires at the age of 32 to pursue his next career as a doctor.

Additionally, an open water swimmer, Emma Finlin, qualified based on her results in the women's 10km marathon during the 2024 World Aquatics Championships held in Doha, Qatar in February. Originally, Finlin narrowly missed out on securing Canada's continental qualifying spot for the Americas, finishing 0.7 seconds behind her closest rival from the Americas region. However, she later received word that she would be given the unassigned spot for Oceania, where there were not enough competitors to fill his quota.

The squad in Paris includes 13 swimmers with Olympic experience and six Olympic medalists. Fifteen swimmers on Canada's Paris 2024 Olympic team have won medals at world swimming championships, and 13 won medals at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago last October.

“I am very pleased with the makeup of Swimming Canada’s Olympic team. The Trials were a great event and the result can be seen by the strength of the team,” said John Atkinson, Swimming Canada’s High Performance Director. “Many of our athletes have shown world-class performances in both the men’s and women’s events and that is extremely pleasing at the Trials. The team has world-class quality in many disciplines and now the focus of all our team members is to prepare for improvement and progress from the Trials to the Games and be ready for 9 days of competition in the pool in Paris.”

Team Canada has won 55 Olympic swimming medals, second only to track and field for the most Olympic medals won by Canadians in a summer sport.

The swimming will take place from July 27 to August 4 (days 1 to 9) at the Paris La Défense Arena, while the women's marathon will take place on August 8 (day 13) at the Pont Alexandre III venue.

“Congratulations to the Canadian swimmers who have secured their ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.” Their performances during the Trials this week gave us several moments of intensity where focus, passion and excellence were in the spotlight. “It's inspiring to see these athletes pushing themselves and setting ever higher goals,” said Bruny Surin, Team Canada's Chef de Mission at Paris 2024. “Their potential is undeniable and I can't wait to see how Team Canada is making a splash in Paris and is on the podium.”

The Team Canada swimming team for the 2024 Paris Olympics also includes the following coaches and support staff:

Brent Arckey (Raleigh, USA) – Coach
Greg Arkhurst (Montreal, Que.) – Coach

Steward denies setting up a political support fund and confirms he hired Accutor https://breakingheadline.lighting/steward-denies-setting-up-a-political-support-fund-and-confirms-he-hired-accutor/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/steward-denies-setting-up-a-political-support-fund-and-confirms-he-hired-accutor/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 12:15:18 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/steward-denies-setting-up-a-political-support-fund-and-confirms-he-hired-accutor/

Steward Healthcare denied on Monday that it had set up a political support fund or provided financial favors to current or former Maltese officials or politicians.

Times of Malta reported on Sunday that the company set up a €1 million fund allegedly aimed at funneling bribes to Joseph Muscat, Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi.

The funds were held by Accutor AG, a Swiss company suspected of being used as a central money laundering hub for payments related to the Vitals-Steward hospital deal.

“Steward strongly rejects the suggestion that the company has set up a 'political support fund.' “We have not been asked for or granted any financial favors by any current or former Maltese official or minister and there has never been any such fund,” the company said on Monday.

The company did not mention that the Maltese Court of Appeal in October declared the contract void after confirming fraud. Senior government officials were involved in the privatization scam and the Maltese government failed in its duty to protect national interests and defend Steward throughout the trial, the court had said.

Steward said it acquired a concession for a small community hospital at the end of its useful life, a rehabilitation facility in poor condition; and an abandoned, asbestos-contaminated building.

“We also inherited many unexpected liabilities totaling over 60 million euros. The original terms of the concession were described as “unbankable” by the Maltese government itself, the EU and the National Audit Office.

“Steward has negotiated in good faith with the government for years to bring the concession into compliance and make it bankable,” the company said.

“During this time, Steward hired and paid Accutor as a business consultant for a limited period of time. “These efforts to regularize the contract were unsuccessful and Steward was left with no choice but to terminate the contract for breach of contract and commence legal proceedings against Malta at the International Court of Arbitration,” the US-based company said.

Steward claimed that Malta's media was “pursuing ridiculous conspiracy theories and conjectures” and complained that they had not been asked for information.

“We also understand that this may be an issue that may be of interest to the judicial inquiry and the courts. “It is astonishing that this investigation has taken over four years to conduct and reportedly cost over 10 million euros, and yet we have never been asked for any information regarding the contents of this article,” the company said.

It insisted it was “transparent throughout”.

“However, neither the Maltese media nor the courts seem interested in dealing with the facts.”

Despite having a short preparation, Sharma didn't find it difficult to adapt in her first Philippine team assignment, as she worked alongside her Akari teammate Faith Nisperos and former coach Jorge Souza De Brito, and most importantly, Angel Canino, Thea Gagate and Julia is Coronel, with whom she shared La Salle's UAAP championship run last year in Season 85 before turning pro in the PVL.

“I'm super happy because this is like a reunion for us. I have been away from them for about a year and it is a completely different feeling to see them playing at the highest level here in the country,” Sharma told reporters. “It's like, 'Wow, friendship goals!'”

The goals of the Chinese annex are “not that easy” in front of the new president of Taiwan https://breakingheadline.lighting/the-goals-of-the-chinese-annex-are-not-that-easy-in-front-of-the-new-president-of-taiwan/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/the-goals-of-the-chinese-annex-are-not-that-easy-in-front-of-the-new-president-of-taiwan/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 12:02:16 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/the-goals-of-the-chinese-annex-are-not-that-easy-in-front-of-the-new-president-of-taiwan/

William Lai, Taiwan's new incumbent president, was eager to approve liens with fellow Democrats as he toured the world.

The Chinese government's long-standing ambitions to control Taiwan pose a threat to world security, even if the island is independent under all possible conditions from Beijing, and shortly thereafter turns against the President William Lai as the son of the Prime Minister investiture .

The founder of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who gained from his investment in the USA the opportunity to “end the dialogue that leads to confrontation”, is based on the principles of “party and unity” and the quid pro quo tourism and study enrollment the Chinese continent. Taiwan's institutions are not possible.

The policy was repeated in broad strokes by her predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, when she enthusiastically reiterated the Chinese school and confirmed that Taiwan was there de facto independent. He is Tsai's vice president and is considered the successor for the sequel.

“Today, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and Hamas are ongoing throughout the world,” Lai said. “China’s military actions and coercion in the gray zone are considered the most important strategic strategies for the country and global stability.” »

Seventy years ago, China viewed Taiwan as a separate region that was “reunified” with the continent for a day. These efforts come at a time when Taipei is developing more democracy and is increasingly criticizing the authoritarian model promoted by the Communist Party.

Chinese President Xi Jinping refused to rule out resorting to military power to save “reunification,” deeming it vital to his son’s “rajeunissement.”

Using his rhetoric to the alarm call of Western allies, it was noted that the price of control by the power of the island of 23.5 million people has not led to a massacre and has practically not resulted in devastating economic damage – Taiwan's monopoly on the semiconductor industry.

The Chinese were recently dispatched by Taiwan's military aircraft and drones and accused of massive disinformation campaigns.

“Alors que nous poursuivons l'idéal de paix, nous nous nous nourrir aucune illusion,” Lai explained.

“While the Chinese refuse to renounce the use of force against Taiwan, all of us in Taiwan understand that we accept the integration of the Chinese position and respect our sovereignty, the ambition of the Chinese.” Annexing Taiwan is not easy. «

Say “la paix par la force”

They are obliged to respect the “four engagements” established by their predecessor. Based on the clarity that came to my attention on Monday, these agreements, which include the engagement between Taiwan and China, are not necessarily subordinate to another. It was a test for Beijing, which leased Taipei to a new state power that was damaging its territories.

The Chinese have already proposed a “one country, two systems” model to integrate Taiwan into secure autonomy with all countries in line with the territory since they arrived at Hong Kong's return in 1997.

However, Taipei rejected this form, arguing that Beijing was expanding into Hong Kong to lose its rights.

In his words, “It is a major force against China and calls for an end to “political and military intimidation.” But there are also radical ideas that serve to ease tensions and prevent the need to maintain the status they have.

The European Union and the United States maintained diplomatic relations with China and official liens with Taiwan, while also maintaining the status quo.

Taiwan's leaders are responsible for the multiple sources of friction between Western allies and Beijing. They reaffirm Xi's unconditional friendship with Vladimir Poutine, his loyal business practices and violations of human rights that he has committed to his service and committed to him, and the island's participation in international organizations, such as the Prochain Assemblée mondiale de la santé (AMS ).

In these last years, the multi-part delegations of the European Parliament and the American Congress carried out an observation trip to Taipei and signed a southern croissant.

It is absolutely certain that this enthusiasm will not lead to diplomatic enlightenment. Lai's investment was destroyed in the presence of a top chef from small heads of state such as Eswatini, the Marshall Islands and the Palestinians, who developed further formal relations with Taiwan. The democrats of the West were instructed by lower officials to leave the Colère de Pékin.

As an alternative, the 64-year-old president proposed strengthening international cooperation in the domains of artificial intelligence, climate change and regional security. It is also involved in the implementation of bilateral investment agreements, an idea already approved by the European Parliament and rejected by the European Commission.

“Our tenant on other coasts pays Democrats, we are a former Pacific world community capable of demonstrating the force of deterrence and preventing war, and is not a goal of peace through force,” Lai explained.

According to government estimates, the moon ceremony included around 20,000 people and featured a variety of spectacles focused on the value of Taiwan's cultural diversity and artistic creativity.

LONDON – A British court has ruled that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can appeal against the order of his extradition to the United States on espionage charges.

Two Supreme Court judges said on Monday that Assange had grounds to challenge the British government's extradition order.

The ruling sets the stage for an appeal process that is likely to further prolong a years-long legal saga. Assange faces 17 espionage charges and one computer misuse charge over his publication of a trove of secret US documents on his website nearly 15 years ago. The Australian computer expert has spent the last five years in a maximum security British prison after seeking refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years.

This is a recent update. AP's earlier story follows below.

LONDON (AP) — Julian Assange's lawyers argued Monday that the United States had given “manifestly inadequate” assurances that the WikiLeaks founder would enjoy free press protection if he was extradited to the United States to face espionage charges .

The High Court hearing in London could end with Assange being sent to the US to face espionage charges or giving him another chance to appeal his extradition.

The outcome will depend on how much weight judges give to U.S. officials' assurances that Assange's rights will not be trampled when he stands trial.

Assange, 52, was charged with 17 espionage charges and one count of computer misuse for posting a trove of classified US documents on his website nearly 15 years ago.

In March, two judges rejected most of Assange's arguments but said he could take his case to the appeals court unless the U.S. guaranteed that he would not face the death penalty if extradited and that he would have equal protection of free speech like a US citizen would enjoy.

The court said that if Assange could not invoke the First Amendment, his extradition would likely be incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights, which also provides for freedom of expression and media protection.

The US has given those assurances, but Assange's legal team and his supporters argue they are not good enough to send him to the US federal court system because the promises of the First Amendment have not been fulfilled. The US has said Assange can try to invoke the amendment, but it is up to a judge to decide whether he can.

The WikiLeaks founder, who has spent the last five years in a British prison, was not in court to attend the debate over his fate. He was not present for health reasons, Fitzgerald said.

If Assange prevails on Monday, it would lay the foundation for an appeal process that is likely to prolong the already long legal saga.

If the court accepts the US statement, it would mark the end of Assange's legal challenges in the UK, although it is unclear what would immediately follow.

His legal team is ready to ask the European Court of Human Rights to intervene. But his supporters fear Assange could be transferred before the court in Strasbourg, France, can stop his deportation.

Justices Victoria Sharp and Jeremy Johnson can also delay issuing a decision.

If Assange loses in court, he may still have a chance at freedom.

Biden said last month he was considering a request from Australia to drop the case and allow Assange to return to his home country.

Officials did not provide further details, but Stella Assange said it was “a good sign” and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the comment was encouraging.

After the debut of our lives, we said that life depends on a single person: the silver. We know that the good friends know their good friends.

The society at the source of our lives is a society corrupted by money, a society that no longer penetrates the world, a society of the world shaped by its life, a society of our people I was busy that she made her tête.

The current generation of young people aged 12 to 16. Vaperfumer, trumper, player, all the motifs that make the young people cool. During the time, the children were busy monitoring their father, and when they were being serviced, the children were 100% busy with the battery.

Children who do not sit for long periods of time, in the place of their absence or life, have to spend their time scrolling on their smartphones.

Since I'm in the illusion of a parfait life, but behind the filters, it's discreet. The coming generation is there for us and can get their money's worth after a short time.

People are connected by the appearance of skin and the effort involved. Our day was a touch of economy and the money cost us nothing and the people who were unsure gave them good services. In fact, they were unable to comment on their own garden.

The phones were not the source we had in October of that year, they actually lived in this fake world and were rediscovered by us. On the other side of the robots, the virtual key points, the question of whether a human can live, it is good and essential.

Alors les jeunes de main, levez-vous; réveillons-nous! There is no opportunity to sleep between four people.

Scientists achieve quantum breakthrough in 2D materials https://breakingheadline.lighting/scientists-achieve-quantum-breakthrough-in-2d-materials/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/scientists-achieve-quantum-breakthrough-in-2d-materials/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:43:56 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/scientists-achieve-quantum-breakthrough-in-2d-materials/

Scientists have found that a “single atomic defect” in a layered 2D material can capture quantum information for microseconds at room temperature, highlighting the potential of 2D materials to advance quantum technologies.

The defect, discovered by researchers at the Universities of Manchester and Cambridge using a thin material called hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), shows spin coherence – a property where an electronic spin can retain quantum information – under ambient conditions. They also found that these rotations can be controlled with light.

To date, only a few solid-state materials have achieved this, representing a significant advance in quantum technology.

The results, published in Nature Materials, also confirm that the accessible spin coherence at room temperature is longer than the researchers originally thought.

Carmem M. Gilardoni, co-author of the paper and a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory, where the research was carried out, said: “The results show that once we write a specific quantum state on the spin of these elements, we can write them.” Electrons store this information for about a millionth of a second, making this system a promising platform for quantum applications.

“That may seem short, but the interesting thing is that this system does not require any special conditions – it can store the spin quantum state even at room temperature without the need for large magnets.”

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is an ultra-thin material composed of stacked one-atom-thick layers, similar to sheets of paper. These layers are held together by forces between molecules, but sometimes there are tiny flaws between these layers called “atomic defects,” similar to a crystal in which molecules are trapped. These defects can absorb and emit light that we can see, and they can also serve as local traps for electrons. Because of the defects in hBN, scientists can now study how these trapped electrons behave, particularly the spin property that allows electrons to interact with magnetic fields. They can also control and manipulate the electron spins using light in these defects at room temperature – something that has never been possible before.

Dr. Hannah Stern, lead author of the paper and a Royal Society University Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of Manchester, said: “Working with this system has shown us the power of fundamental investigation of new materials. As for the hBN system, as a field we can exploit excited state dynamics in other new material platforms for use in future quantum technologies.

“Each new promising system will expand the toolbox of available materials, and each new step in this direction will advance the scalable implementation of quantum technologies.”

Prof Richard Curry added: “Researching materials for quantum technologies is vital to supporting the UK’s ambitions in this area. This work represents another leading breakthrough by a University of Manchester researcher in the field of materials for quantum technologies and strengthens the international impact of our work in this area.

Although there is still much to be explored before it is ready for technical applications, the finding paves the way for future technological applications, particularly in sensing.

The scientists are still thinking about how they can make these defects even better and more reliable and are currently testing how much they can extend the spin storage time. They are also investigating whether they can optimize system and material parameters important for quantum technology applications, such as defect stability over time and the quality of the light emitted by this defect.

Wild breed shows potential for developing drought-resistant potatoes: researchers https://breakingheadline.lighting/wild-breed-shows-potential-for-developing-drought-resistant-potatoes-researchers-3/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/wild-breed-shows-potential-for-developing-drought-resistant-potatoes-researchers-3/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:42:52 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/wild-breed-shows-potential-for-developing-drought-resistant-potatoes-researchers-3/

CHARLOTTETOWN — Federal scientists in Atlantic Canada are trying to develop a new potato variety better adapted to growing conditions caused by climate change.

CHARLOTTETOWN — Federal scientists in Atlantic Canada are trying to develop a new potato variety better adapted to growing conditions caused by climate change.

Bourlaye Fofana, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, leads a team in Charlottetown that has been studying wild potato varieties native to the South American Andes that show potential to support the development of a more drought-resistant potato for North American markets.

According to the Department of Agriculture, there are more than 5,000 varieties of potatoes worldwide, and this large number has reduced the genetic differences between many of them, making some potatoes less resistant to disease and climate change.

“We see a lot of problems because the genetic diversity among these cultivated commercial varieties is quite low,” Fofana said in an interview. “With climate change and heatwaves, this lack of genetic diversity could be a major problem in the future.”

Most commercial potato varieties are of tetraploid origin – they have four copies of each chromosome in their DNA, with two copies inherited from each plant parent. Fofana worked with wild potato varieties native to Peru, which have two copies of each chromosome and are known as diploid. He said the chromosome difference makes it easier to work with the wild potato variety in the lab.

“It’s easier to find (genetic) markers; So if you find your marker in diploids, it can be used in a tetraploid,” he said.

Fofana said the wild potatoes were smaller than traditional commercial varieties but looked the same.

“I have been working on diploids since 2014 and we get clones that are viable in terms of yield, tuber size and quality,” he said. “For example, we know that the starch content is quite good and the processing quality is quite good.”

Fofana and his team, along with researchers in Kentville, N.S., and a researcher in Chile, examined 384 diploid potato clones for drought tolerance and plant maturity. Of these, 127 were found to be late maturing and tolerant of drought conditions, while nine were early to moderately late maturing and drought tolerant.

Fofana said he was “very excited” about the potential of the research.

“Because we have diploid (potatoes) in our collection that ripen early, and that means you can plant them and give the expected yield as early as possible,” he said. “We also have some clones that can grow over a longer period of time.”

The research by Fofana and his team is considered an important first step scientifically. About 50 of the most promising clones will be handed over to the department's breeding program in Fredericton for further investigation.

At the Fredericton facility, the potato clones are examined for size and shape as well as yield potential and cooking and processing properties. They could then be released as potato varieties or their seeds, plants or plant parts could be used in potato breeding.

Fofana said strengthening crop resilience is becoming increasingly important as conditions become drier and hotter, even in the best growing areas of Atlantic Canada.

“With climate change, the frequency of droughts is increasing, especially where water resources are limited,” Fofana said. “So we have to be proactive and see how we can adapt our cultivation and our cultivation system to these new challenges.”

Rystad warns wildfires in Alberta could threaten over 2 million barrels per day https://breakingheadline.lighting/rystad-warns-wildfires-in-alberta-could-threaten-over-2-million-barrels-per-day/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/rystad-warns-wildfires-in-alberta-could-threaten-over-2-million-barrels-per-day/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:40:03 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/rystad-warns-wildfires-in-alberta-could-threaten-over-2-million-barrels-per-day/

Wildfires in Alberta could threaten more than two million barrels of oil sands production per day, Rystad Energy vice-president Thomas Liles said in a special market update sent to Rigzone late last week.

“Wildfire conditions have worsened in northeastern Alberta, the focal point of the province's oil sands industry,” Liles said in the update, adding that the Wood Buffalo Regional Municipality issued an evacuation order on May 14 for several communities “from one are threatened with an outbreak.” “controlling a 209 square kilometer (81 square mile) wildfire southwest of Fort McMurray.”

“Although oil sands operators have not yet indicated any impact on operations, Rystad Energy estimates that more than 2.1 million barrels per day of marketable oil sands production could be at risk if conditions materially deteriorate, representing approximately 2.6 percent of total crude oil and oil Lease equals condensate supply,” Liles warned in the update.

“Although the wildfire threat rating in affected areas improved overnight, MFW-017 has not yet been detained and the evacuation order remains in effect, so threats to production cannot be ruled out,” he continued.

In the update, Liles emphasized that the MWF-017 fire is located on the right bank of the Athabasca River and overlaps with “critical” midstream infrastructure that supports the Horizon and Syncrude mining and modernization projects.

“The closest producing areas include Suncor’s Base Operations, Syncrude and the Long Lake thermal in-situ project,” Liles said in the update.

“However, an evacuation order for Fort McMurray could impact a number of service activities and projects further north,” he warned.

“In addition, the spread of wildfires further south could impact Long Lake and Surmont, which together produce more than 200,000 barrels per day and were both severely affected by wildfires in May 2016,” he continued.

The fire follows the upheaval experienced by the industry in the first half of 2016, when a major wildfire rocked Fort McMurray, knocking out nearly a million barrels per day and 600,000 barrels per day in May and June 2016 alone, respectively. Liles explained in the update.

However, he pointed out that there are several differences between 2016 and the current fire.

“The 2016 fire lacked access to coniferous forest canopies, resulting in faster and more unpredictable spread,” Liles said in the update.

“The current flora around Fort McMurray is still recovering from the events eight years ago, so MFW-017 is spreading more slowly on the ground,” he added.

“Despite this, wildfire seasons in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin have only gotten worse in recent years,” he warned.

“During the spring and summer of 2023, they conducted numerous short-cycle operations in northwestern Alberta and northeastern British Columbia,” Liles said.

“The industry entered 2024 with a cautious view of conditions as experts warned of a potentially more severe wildfire season due to limited snow cover in the winter months and ongoing drought,” he continued.

There is a significant wildfire in the Alberta Forest Reserve, according to an update posted May 19 on the Government of Alberta's website.

“MWF017 is classified as out of control at 19,493 hectares…Yesterday there was no growth of the fire and fire activity was minimal,” the update said.

“There are currently 233 firefighters, 24 helicopters and 40 pieces of heavy equipment deployed on the forest fire,” it said.

“Structural protection is in place in the Abasand, Prairie Creek, Grayling Terrace and Beacon Hill neighborhoods, as well as Rickards Landing Industrial Park, Gregoire Lake Estates and Gregoire Lake 176,” it said.

The update noted that the cause of this wildfire remains under investigation.

An update posted on the Government of Alberta website on May 16 revealed that there were two significant wildfires in the Alberta Forest Reserve.

“MWF017 is classified as out of control at 19,820 hectares,” it added. In an update posted on the government website the day before, the fire was listed as out of control at 20,940 hectares.

“The size reduction is due to a more precise sampling of the forest fire extent. This does not mean that the forest fire has become smaller,” the May 16 update warned.

“There are currently 172 firefighters, 22 helicopters and 57 pieces of heavy equipment deployed on the forest fire,” it said.

“Alberta Wildfire and the Wood Buffalo Regional Municipality have assumed unified command and will work together to manage this wildfire. The cause of this wildfire remains under investigation,” it said.

The other notable wildfire was listed in the update as the Kleskun Creek Fire.

“Alberta Wildfire is assisting the County of Grande Prairie with a wildfire 4 km east of the town of Teepee Creek,” the government said in the update.

“It is estimated at 1,382ha and is classified as held. No significant growth was observed yesterday,” she added, stressing that the forest fire will be removed as a significant forest fire from May 17.

A significant wildfire is of significant public concern and could pose a threat to public safety, communities or critical infrastructure, the government update said. Notable wildfires typically do not include mutual aid wildfires located outside of Alberta's forest reserve, she added, noting that Alberta Wildfire provides assistance in a mutual aid wildfire but is not the lead agency.

From Oregon to British Columbia: Why the drug decriminalization debate is back in the spotlight https://breakingheadline.lighting/from-oregon-to-british-columbia-why-the-drug-decriminalization-debate-is-back-in-the-spotlight/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/from-oregon-to-british-columbia-why-the-drug-decriminalization-debate-is-back-in-the-spotlight/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:38:51 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/from-oregon-to-british-columbia-why-the-drug-decriminalization-debate-is-back-in-the-spotlight/

A study conducted in Oregon found that the state's first decriminalization policy in the United States was not responsible for the rising rate of fatal drug overdoses. Despite this, the policy was rolled back as public drug use and overdoses increased, leading to a backlash. Advocates for a health-based approach to the overdose crisis expressed disappointment over the failure of the Oregon experiment and feared a similar situation in British Columbia, where calls are growing to scrap the decriminalization pilot. The impact of public drug use and overdoses has led to safety concerns and discussions about the balance between police and addiction responders in responding to public safety calls.

Oregon's decriminalization policy, approved by nearly 60 percent of voters, replaced criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of drugs with fines waived when users call a treatment hotline. However, implementation of the policy was hampered by problems including poor communication between different government departments and limited access to treatment services. Oregon has struggled to allocate appropriated funding to expand addiction treatment services, resulting in delays in expanding treatment space and access. The state's addiction rate was the second highest in the country despite having the worst addiction treatment system in the United States

Oregon has faced various challenges, such as the fallout from the pandemic, a housing crisis and increasing homelessness, which contributed to an increase in public drug use. The state saw a 41 percent increase in overdose deaths between 2022 and 2023, largely due to the proliferation of fentanyl in street drugs. Fentanyl, coupled with the housing shortage, led to a rise in homelessness, further exacerbating the overdose crisis. The collapse of Oregon's decriminalization policy amid these challenges has frustrated researchers and advocates, highlighting the need for patience, support and compassion to effectively address the addiction crisis.

British Columbia, which has seen a similar increase in public drug use and overdoses, also piloted decriminalization. However, problems related to the implementation of overdose prevention measures and supervised drug consumption sites, as well as an increase in overdose deaths, have led to calls for a reversal of the policy. Opposition parties in BC and Ottawa have criticized decriminalization as worsening the opioid crisis, which has led to discussions about recriminalizing personal drug possession. The drug policy debate in both Oregon and British Columbia highlights the complexity of combating addiction and the need for a comprehensive, long-term approach.

Researchers and advocates warn against reactionary measures and emphasize the importance of considering the long-term effects of drug policy. The focus on criminalizing drug possession, as advocated by some lawmakers, overlooks the need for comprehensive treatment and harm reduction strategies. Policy changes that prioritize treatment and recovery while addressing underlying issues such as homelessness and fentanyl contamination are seen as essential to effectively addressing the overdose crisis. Using examples such as Portugal, where decriminalization policies have led to significant reductions in drug-related harm, advocates emphasize the importance of viewing drug policy from a public health rather than criminal perspective.

Addressing the overdose crisis requires a multifaceted approach that includes expanding treatment services, supporting harm reduction strategies, and addressing underlying social issues such as homelessness and fentanyl contamination. The challenges in Oregon and British Columbia underscore the complexity of combating addiction and the need for long-term policy solutions. While the backlash against decriminalization highlights immediate concerns about public drug use and overdoses, researchers and advocates emphasize the importance of patience, compassion, and support in implementing effective drug policies that prioritize health and well-being.

The Government of Manitoba says emergency financial assistance is available to residents of Cranberry Portage and surrounding communities forced from their homes by a nearby wildfire.

The Government of Manitoba says emergency financial assistance is available to residents of Cranberry Portage and surrounding communities forced from their homes by a nearby wildfire.

The assistance is available to people who need to evacuate for seven days or longer due to wildfires.

Eligible adults receive $200 and eligible children receive $100.

Prime Minister Wab Kinew says the one-off payment will “help ensure families do not have to worry about grocery shopping or paying bills during this difficult time.”

For evacuations lasting longer than three days, support is in addition to the services of the social emergency service, including coverage of the direct costs of accommodation as well as support with food and transport costs.

The province says the allowance will be paid to individuals and families who are registered with an ESS reception center and meet the eligibility criteria.

About 675 people from Cranberry Portage and surrounding areas who were displaced last weekend were allowed to return home Sunday.

Officials said the fire near Flin Flon was about 370 square kilometers as of Friday, but the fire line closest to Cranberry Portage was under control.

Opinion: The Liberals throw down their last-minute weapon 17 months before an election https://breakingheadline.lighting/opinion-the-liberals-throw-down-their-last-minute-weapon-17-months-before-an-election/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/opinion-the-liberals-throw-down-their-last-minute-weapon-17-months-before-an-election/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:36:56 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/opinion-the-liberals-throw-down-their-last-minute-weapon-17-months-before-an-election/

It seems a little early for the kitchen sink.

But Justin Trudeau and his Liberals saw an opportunity, however small, to attack the Conservatives on abortion – and they took it.

Along with guns and the privatization of healthcare, abortion is one of the holy trinity of explosive issues that the Liberals throw at the Tories in every election campaign. But they usually wait until late in the negotiation phase before resorting to these weapons.

Apparently Canadian policy has moved forward 17 months ahead of schedule.

Mr. Trudeau's Liberals have already put forward what appears to be an election budget and public relations campaign. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre dodges questions like a front-runner on issues as simple as whether civil servants should go to the office three days a week. The NDP is testing new slogans that attack not the governing party but the leading Conservatives.

We've moved on to a low-energy version of the stupid phases of the campaign. Excessive abortion policies are a telltale indicator.

Mr. Poilievre has worked to guard against this by stating unequivocally that a government led by him would not legislate on abortion. Still, it's no surprise that liberals are trying to move past it. It's just a surprise that they're doing it so soon.

Marci Ien, the Liberal government's women and equalities minister, got the ball rolling a few weeks ago. She pointed to Mr. Poilievre's claim that he would use the Constitution's derogation clause to override the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and deny parole to murderers, and argued that the Conservative leader could also use it to seek abortion to criminalize.

That was far-fetched. But at least a few days later, the Liberals could point to two Conservative MPs who oppose abortion, Arnold Viersen and Cathay Wagantall, who spoke about the issue at the annual March for Life on Parliament Hill.

But it was the closure of an abortion clinic in New Brunswick, where Premier Blaine Higgs' Progressive Conservative provincial government only funds hospital abortion services, that made Mr. Trudeau warn of a broader Conservative threat to abortion rights. He claimed that the erosion of abortion rights seen in the United States is likely to happen here in Canada because Conservatives are not standing up for women.

This is hardly a debate based on pure facts, but it is worth noting that there is no federal abortion law in Canada that could be overturned by a court, and Mr. Poilievre has said he will not pass one. It's still fair to wonder whether he would change some policies to appease abortion opponents – former prime minister Stephen Harper cut foreign aid to organizations that provide abortions – but he has ruled out legislation.

One reason Liberals typically wait until the negotiation phase before campaigning on the issue of abortion is that it's not so much about policy disagreements as it is about raising doubts about whether the Conservatives have the same mindset of most ordinary Canadians on issues they consider crucial, particularly abortion, guns and public health care.

Mr. Trudeau's party is now so far behind in the polls – 20 percentage points behind the Conservatives, according to the latest Nanos Research poll – that they fear being declared dead. They must fear that even a weak NDP could one day trigger an election. They will take any short-term hold they can find.

The centerpiece of their April budget – an increase in the capital gains tax inclusion rate, sold as a “fairness” measure to tax the rich – Mr Trudeau's team probably would have rejected two years ago as too politically risky.

But instead of devising a strategy to win an election with 34 percent of the vote in the fall of 2025, they are looking for ways to climb to 28 percent in the polls in a few months.

They have tried to stimulate housing construction with big spending announcements, promised to help younger Canadians financially, sold the tax changes as a social justice issue – and constantly watched how the polls were moving.

When they saw an opportunity to attack conservatives on abortion, they threw in the kitchen sink.

Two candidates in Labrador are disappointed that Elections NL has not followed through on its commitment to distribute materials in Indigenous languages to voters who need them.

According to the candidates, Chief Election Officer Bruce Chaulk had previously pledged to have election materials, including ballots, translated into Newfoundland and Labrador's indigenous languages, including Inuktitut, Innu-aimun and Mi'kmaw.

“You can't promise something and then … say you're going to provide accommodation and then withdraw it at such a late date,” said Shannon Tobin, the PC candidate in Lake Melville's central Labrador district.

The district includes the Innu community of Sheshatshiu. Tobin said residents there only recently found out that translated materials were no longer being made available, ostensibly because they didn't fit Elections NL's schedule.

Tobin said they had already seen problems arising from a failure to support monolingual Indigenous voters, a difficulty exacerbated by the switch to mail-in voting, which was scheduled after an outbreak of COVID-19 on the eve of the scheduled election date virus variant was confirmed in the vote on February 13th.

“It's very important that in this day and age when we're trying to build better relationships and better working relationships with our Indigenous groups, that we make sure that we provide those services to make sure that people have access and remove all of those barriers will be dismantled,” Tobin said.

A case of “access to democracy”

He said this is not a new problem for many Labrador residents. According to the PC candidate, he has friends whose first language is an indigenous language and they have already seen problems at polling stations where voters require translation services and rely on a single poll auditor to provide translated instructions.

“When it comes to an election, we try to make sure everyone has access to democracy,” Tobin said. “And make sure you are able to do it [vote for] Who you think is best there to represent you is part of our democracy. It should be something we always try to find accommodation for [for] as good as we can.

CBC contacted Elections NL to clarify the decision not to provide translated material.

Communications manager Adrienne Luther said when the election switched to mail-in voting, Chaulk reached out to his court partners for translation assistance. However, the schedule for the translations would not have met Elections NL's deadline for sending election documents.

Luther said Elections NL is committed to seeking Indigenous language translation services for future elections.

Bruce Chaulk was not available for an interview on this topic.

Communities in the north feel excluded

Despite claims that Elections NL used translation services, Patricia Johnson-Castle, the NDP candidate for Torngat Mountains, does not believe any efforts were made.

Johnson-Castle, who is active in several regional Facebook groups, said she has seen no attempt by the government to reach out to people who could help with translation.

New Democrat Patricia Johnson-Castle says the people of coastal Labrador are all too used to finding solutions to the lack of official support. New Democrat Patricia Johnson-Castle says the people of coastal Labrador are all too used to finding solutions to the lack of official support.

Without that support, Johnson-Castle took matters into her own hands, arranging translations to receive mail-in ballots in Inuktitut and Innu-aimon.

“I was able to find translators for both Nain and Natuashish, so it’s kind of a where-there-is-there’s-a-way situation,” she said. “So I don’t really buy it when Elections NL says they weren’t able to do that or weren’t able to accommodate it.”

“When you put in effort, people usually respond to that effort.”

CBC News asked the Liberal campaign for its opinion on the issue.

“As the independent agency responsible for administering provincial elections, Elections NL is navigating this unprecedented situation to ensure voters have a safe and accessible way to cast their vote,” the campaign team said in a statement on Friday.

“It is our understanding from supporters we engage with that, when necessary, Elections NL is doing everything it can to assist those requesting an adjustment in the special election process.”

Long-standing problems with the language barrier

But Johnson-Castle says people on the North Shore are used to the province's lack of support.

“There's no history of the province supporting the people here – people are kind of used to a status quo that says if you need to fix something, you have to do it yourself. The province will not do that for you,” she said.

Regarding in-person voting, Johnson-Castle said community support has alleviated what she said has always been an underlying issue of the language barrier. Given the challenges of postal voting, she said the government must fulfill its obligation to provide services.

“I think that [language barrier] “It's probably been a problem for a long time, but because voting was in person, people were able to get around it somehow,” Johnson-Castle said. “Bilingual people can accompany monolingual people to vote.” Sales stand, [and] A lot of times the people working at a voting booth are bilingual, so they can help people.”

The exclusion of Indigenous voters, Johnson-Castle said, is a sign that electoral law needs to be modernized to accommodate voters who have always been there but not necessarily heard.

“The fact that it is so difficult for people who speak a monolingual Indigenous language to receive services in their language is a testament to the respect that the provincial government actually has for many Indigenous people here,” Johnson-Castle said.

“We have to fight tooth and nail for every service we get from the provincial government.”

Elections NL has set the deadline for returning special ballots to be Friday, March 12th.

The last solar storm was so violent that it sank to the ocean floor https://breakingheadline.lighting/the-last-solar-storm-was-so-violent-that-it-sank-to-the-ocean-floor/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/the-last-solar-storm-was-so-violent-that-it-sank-to-the-ocean-floor/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:34:56 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/the-last-solar-storm-was-so-violent-that-it-sank-to-the-ocean-floor/

The beginning of May was an extremely stormy time for our sun.

A powerful solar storm lit up skies around the world with fascinating and intense aurora borealis. Surprisingly, its effects were felt far beyond our planet's atmosphere, even on the ocean floor.

Ocean Networks Canada's instruments, stationed deep beneath the ocean's surface, detected large disturbances in Earth's magnetic field.

These instruments, which act as underwater observatories, are located up to 2.7 kilometers deep beneath the ocean's surface. These are primarily used as magnetic compasses for monitoring the ocean off the coast of Canada.

ONC's underwater observatories were able to record the effects of the powerful solar storm that impacted Earth in May. The data suggested “temporary distortions” in Earth's magnetic field and showed how far-reaching these solar events can be.

“The reach of these data recordings miles below the ocean surface is a highlight[s] The extent of the solar flare last weekend suggests this[s] that the data could be useful to better understand the geographic extent and intensity of these storms,” said Kate Moran, ONC President and CEO.

Data anomaly

Solar storms, or geomagnetic storms, occur when our host star emits massive bursts of energy in the form of solar flares and coronal mass ejections. The rapid stream of particles interacts with the Earth's magnetosphere and results in auroras.

Aside from auroras, these storms can disrupt satellite communications and potentially impact power grids and navigation systems.

The underwater observatories are located on the west and east coasts of Canada. Compasses at a depth of 25 meters showed movements in the range of +30 to -30 degrees, confirming the enormous influence of the solar storm even at such remote depths.

Compass data collected by ONC's large cable-based underwater observatories VENUS and NEPTUNE off Vancouver Island, at Burrard Inlet on the Pacific coast and at Conception Bay on the Atlantic coast show the magnetic field distortion experienced during a solar storm May 10-12 (UTC). occurs. , 2024. ONC

Detection of a solar storm

ONC researchers noticed anomalies in the data during routine quality checks. At first it was thought that they were caused by an earthquake.

“I looked into whether it might have been an earthquake, but that didn't make much sense because the changes in the data lasted too long and happened in different places at the same time,” said Alex Slonimer, a scientific data specialist at ONC.

“Then I investigated whether it was a solar flare since the sun has been active recently,” Slonimer added.

In fact, the data discrepancy was due to magnetic disturbances caused by solar storms. The scientists discovered that the greatest deviations of the compass needles coincided with the most active and colorful auroras.

“The next two years will be the peak of the 11-year solar cycle. After a decade of relative inactivity, auroral events like this past weekend are likely to become more common in the next few years, although the Sun's variability makes accurate prediction of such events impossible,” said Justin Albert, a professor of physics at the University of Victoria, who runs the ONC Leads initiative.

“ONC's network could provide very useful additional insight into the effects of solar activity on Earth's geomagnetism,” Albert concluded in the press release.

The data collected by these underwater observatories could provide crucial insights into how intensely solar atoms impact the Earth's surface. However, it is unclear whether these disturbances affected marine life. Perhaps these revelations will open up a new research topic.

As the 11-year solar cycle reaches its peak, more stunning northern lights are expected.

Transition to government 'bittersweet' for Nova Scotia autism chief executive https://breakingheadline.lighting/transition-to-government-bittersweet-for-nova-scotia-autism-chief-executive/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/transition-to-government-bittersweet-for-nova-scotia-autism-chief-executive/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:33:49 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/transition-to-government-bittersweet-for-nova-scotia-autism-chief-executive/

The executive director of Autism Nova Scotia has told her staff that she is leaving the nonprofit to take a senior position within the Houston government.

Cynthia Carroll's departure comes just days after Autism Nova Scotia and the province announced their collaboration on Nova Scotia's first Autism Action Plan.

Carroll will be the next deputy secretary of the Department of Community Service. She will replace Cathy MacIsaac, who is retiring at the end of May.

“This is a bit of a bittersweet moment for me,” Carroll said Friday after the Cabinet decision making the change official was posted on the government website. “I am excited to join the Community Services team.

“The timing was right, but I feel like … my transition into government will still be a positive transition for me.” [autism] community.”

Although a record of the decision was released this week, the recommendation to Cabinet to hire Carroll was dated May 2.

Carroll kept the job offer secret because she feared the news would overshadow last week's announcement about the autism plan.

Carroll, who has worked for nonprofits for the past 28 years, has sometimes been an outspoken critic of Houston government.

When asked what she thought about moving into a role where she had less freedom to express her opinions, Carroll said she wasn't sure.

“Well… I’m not ready yet,” she said. “So we’ll have to see how this goes.

“I probably kept my mouth shut a lot in that role too. So that’s familiar to me.”

The Department of Community Services is one of the 10 departments slated to work with Autism Nova Scotia on the action plan, but Carroll isn't sure if that will be an issue it will be asked to address.

She said she would keep an eye on progress regardless of her own role.

“You should probably keep an eye on it from time to time,” Carroll said. “But I’m also ready to roll up my sleeves and charge into whatever direction this journey takes me next.”

Carroll starts her new job on June 1st.

“Indelible Mark”

Autism Nova Scotia posted a press release on its website Friday.

“It is with bittersweet emotion that we announce Cynthia Carroll’s resignation as Executive Director of Autism Nova Scotia, effective June 1, 2024.

“Cynthia’s departure comes after a pivotal moment for Autism Nova Scotia with the announcement of the Provincial Autism Action Plan. The milestone is the result of more than two decades of advocacy and tireless work, with Cynthia at the helm of the organization for 16 years.”

Autism Nova Scotia's chief executive praised Carroll's leadership, noting the organization has grown from three employees in 2008 to more than 100 across the province today.

“Her commitment to the autism community has left an indelible mark and we know she will continue to break down barriers and create positive change in her next chapter,” David Nicholson said in the press release.

Do you intend to buy a prefabricated home in the future? 6 proactive ways to prepare https://breakingheadline.lighting/do-you-intend-to-buy-a-prefabricated-home-in-the-future-6-proactive-ways-to-prepare/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/do-you-intend-to-buy-a-prefabricated-home-in-the-future-6-proactive-ways-to-prepare/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:31:52 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/do-you-intend-to-buy-a-prefabricated-home-in-the-future-6-proactive-ways-to-prepare/

To prepare for owning a new home, you need to understand how your new home warranty will cover you.

If you're looking to buy a new home but have put your plans on hold for now, you're not alone. New research from Tarion shows that compared to last year, approximately 25 per cent fewer Ontario consumers plan to purchase a home in the next 12 months and 34 per cent fewer consumers plan to purchase a new or under-construction home in the next 12 months buy months.

Waiting longer to achieve a big goal can be frustrating, but there is a bright side to the extra time. The journey home can be complex, and taking more time to research beforehand will allow you to go into the process better informed and prepared. This also includes knowing how the manufacturer's warranty can protect you as a consumer after the sale.

In Ontario, most new homes come with a warranty provided by the builder and supported by Tarion, a non-profit consumer protection organization founded by the Government of Ontario. The warranty is designed to give you peace of mind that you will receive the well-built home that was promised to you. However, they play an important role in getting the insurance coverage you are entitled to. And when challenges arise, Tarion can help.

adobestock_486219619

While you wait for the right time to buy, here are 6 tips to help you prepare.

1. Check your builder’s track record

Look for a developer with a good reputation for quality homes and customer service.

It's a good idea to read online reviews and visit showrooms or model suites. Most importantly, check the Ontario Builder Directory online to see if they are licensed to build and sell homes in this province.

2. Hire a real estate or condo attorney

A purchase agreement and accompanying documents contain important details about the terms of sale and detail everything included in the price of your home.

Before you sign the contract, have a lawyer review it with you so you fully understand what you are purchasing.

3. Understand how much of your deposit is protected

If the sale does not close and the developer does not refund your deposit, you can claim compensation from Tarion up to certain limits. This covers you in the rare event that the builder goes bankrupt or fundamentally breaches your agreement or you exercise your right to terminate your purchase agreement.

Protection limits depend on the type and price of the home you are purchasing and are listed on Tarion's website.

4. Be prepared for delays

Your purchase contract specifies a date by which the home will be ready for occupancy, as well as an extended date in the event of delays. These details are set out in an attached document called an Addendum.

If the delays last longer than stated in the addendum, you can request compensation from the contractor of up to $7,500 to cover additional costs such as moving costs or accommodation.

5. Know what to look for during your Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI).

The first viewing of your new home is an exciting milestone. It is also an important opportunity to identify any problems or defects with the home and work with your contractor to correct them. Tarion provides a helpful checklist and other free tools online to help you get the most out of your PDI.

6. Learn more about your new home’s warranty coverage

Once your new home is ready for occupancy, the builder's warranty covers defects for up to seven years. You have the greatest possible insurance coverage in the first year. Therefore, plan to proactively identify potential problems. This will give you more time to work with your contractor to resolve the issues.

Get ready for the responsibility of owning a new home

Owning a home is one of life's largest purchases and comes with a learning curve. This includes learning to care for your home, working with your contractor to resolve potential problems, and managing a warranty claim if necessary.

Most of the time, homeowners and builders are able to resolve issues between them, but Tarion can advise you on the warranty claim process and step in when necessary to assist in resolving a claim.

While you wait for market conditions to change, consider your learning curve so you can move on when the time is right. For more tips and information on the builder's warranty, visit Tarion.com.

Prince Edward's rarely seen son James, 16, sends fans into a frenzy with a cheeky tribute to his father https://breakingheadline.lighting/prince-edwards-rarely-seen-son-james-16-sends-fans-into-a-frenzy-with-a-cheeky-tribute-to-his-father/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/prince-edwards-rarely-seen-son-james-16-sends-fans-into-a-frenzy-with-a-cheeky-tribute-to-his-father/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:31:01 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/prince-edwards-rarely-seen-son-james-16-sends-fans-into-a-frenzy-with-a-cheeky-tribute-to-his-father/

James Wessex, the Earl of Wessex, caused quite a stir among royal fans with his humorous choice of tie during his recent appearance in Windsor on Easter Sunday. The son of Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie looked dapper in a navy blue suit as he joined the rest of the royal family for the annual Easter service at St George's Chapel.

Underneath his dark blue suit, James wore a crisp white shirt. However, it was his odd tie that caught everyone's attention – a choice his uncle, King Charles, would no doubt appreciate.

The monarch is known for his penchant for novelty and patterned ties to add some flair or a hidden message to his outfits. Charles famously wore a Greek flag tie at Cop28 last year following a diplomatic incident between Britain and Greece.

He was also seen wearing his infamous pink tie decorated with a light blue Tyrannosaurus Rex pattern – a playful nod to his nickname Charles Rex, derived from his badge, the Express reports.

The Earl of Wessex, meanwhile, chose a turquoise blue tie with white rabbits. The Down A Rabbit Hole Print Silk Tie is a product from British menswear retailer Charles Tyrwhitt and costs a very reasonable £34.95 (currently sold out). Meanwhile, his father also opted for a dark blue tie, described by many as his “Easter favorite,” decorated with pink chicks.

Royal fans couldn't resist raving about the young royal's adorable fashion choices and donating their own dime. One social media user commented to X: “This tie is adorable! ! !”, while another agreed: “But it's cute and suitable for Easter.”

A third agreed with the sentiment, claiming: “This is it and I'm so happy to see him wearing a quirky tie just like his dad and uncle.” Meanwhile, a fourth fan jokingly declared: “James is officially in now #TheRoyalFunkyTiesClub recorded! (sic).”

16-year-old James is not expected to rise as a senior royal official in the future. Rather, he should enjoy his time as a young man and follow his sister, Lady Louise, to university. In conversation with OK! Jennie Bond said: “James is currently preparing for the first big exam of his school life… his GCSE. Like most 16-year-olds, it's a difficult time for him – although it's unlikely his results will be made public. “That's in.” In keeping with the rest of his upbringing, his parents tried very hard to give James as normal an upbringing as possible – and on the whole they succeeded.”

Looking for the Forever Rapid on the Nottoway River in Quebec https://breakingheadline.lighting/looking-for-the-forever-rapid-on-the-nottoway-river-in-quebec/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/looking-for-the-forever-rapid-on-the-nottoway-river-in-quebec/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:29:53 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/looking-for-the-forever-rapid-on-the-nottoway-river-in-quebec/

A a few days upstream In James Bay, above the seething waters of the flooded Nottoway River, Benny Marr shouted from a boat-length away in mid-June: “In my mind this goes on forever.”

In search of the eternal rapids on the Nottoway River in Quebec

He was referring to the seemingly endless rapids we entered. It's the type of whitewater this region is famous for, where the waves are layered and create holes that could swallow a house. His voice faded into the river, and for a time he was right; This was a never-ending delight of massive waves, a river he had only visited once before, with the kind of wild whitewater he had searched for all over the world.

When holes began to open in the middle of the river – ones that I looked up and down – Benny decided to go right along the river. As the horizon disappeared, the river appeared far below a hidden drop, and Benny accelerated hard until halfway through. It was a ferry not for the faint of heart in fully loaded longboats. With each of his punches, he gave a thumbs up indicating where he would go next.

Benny Marr walks past a large rapid on the Nottoway River in northern Canada
This is the wave that never ends, it keeps flowing, my friend. | Main photo: David Jackson

As the tongue opened below, so did my stomach. All I could see in the chaos below was a needle of water moving through a two-sided hole of destruction. It was Benny's line, but I missed it.

Four days earlier, we had left a bumpy gravel road behind us and began a 160-mile paddle that would end where the road meets the sea in the Cree community of Waskaganish. Benny and Dan Sutherland had just returned from a big wave watching mission in Quebec and I was here to experience the mighty Nottaway that I had heard so much about.

For days we sailed through the large stormy lakes that give the Nottoway River its volume. At this level of flooding, the water not only splashed around the tree trunks, but also deep into the forest. We paddled until the last hint of pink in the sky before settling into a sad flood hut each night.

[inlineads code=”custom_ad_1″]

In the wake of the lakes, horizon lines stretched out, evoking both joy and nausea. As we looked downstream, we saw patches of fog half a kilometer wide. The river banks were not suitable for coastal scouts. Instead of a sighting, Benny launched a drone to look for lines. We crowded around the tiny screen and followed Benny's fingers down the obvious path. It always looks airy from above.

As we entered, the snakes disappeared and holes greeted us. Afterwards, Benny announced that he was still “figuring out this drone scouting thing.” This was not the Congo, where Benny and a legendary expedition kayak team explored Inga Rapids by helicopter and where he was later flown from a small island above an unimaginable cataract. There was no helicopter or large team on the Nottoway, only Benny reminded me to “just look where you want to go, ignore the rest and stay away from the edges.” I watched as he noted the obvious lines left to pursue joy, to strive for greater things, to make sense of chaos and to use his boat like a paintbrush to explore the canvas of a wild rapid.

A Google search for Benny Marr reveals insights into his life. An Ottawa Valley youth with a mullet. The first descent of Site Zed on the Stikine River. The viral drainage ditch descent of Lions Bay. Canyons in Papa New Guinea, among others. He is one of the most famous whitewater paddlers and has secured the cover Fast magazine three times.

One evening I pointed out a small, deep pool in front of camp with walleyes in it. Benny smiled as they pulled, his face concentrating as I taught him to fillet them. All the years on the water and the river still have a lot to teach.

Drama and liberation

But back to my missed hole. As I curled up, I heard Benny screaming high above me and behind me, “You're a warrior, Dave!” But I had to get out, I needed air, and this hole was too big to escape. The next thing I knew it was intense. Then I clung to Benny's bow, blood pouring from my ankles, fighting through holes and catching glimpses of Dan with my boat. It took Benny a long 15 minutes to push me into a coastal eddy. The boys lay between boulders in the warm sun and laughed. Dan narrowly escaped the hole across from me, and being lucky to only have one swimmer instead of two was a huge relief.

On land, Dan drained the water from my boat while I lay exhausted, staring at the blue sky. I pointed to a piece of chaga on a birch tree on the bank. Benny grabbed his river knife and pulled it out, smiling. He had never found the mushrooms responsible for the earthy tea before. That evening we sat around the steaming drink and talked about the big rapids that lay ahead and the 50 kilometers of windy James Bay we had to paddle through to get to the road. We reminisced about bad swimming and Benny shook his head at the day's drama.

He was there in his happy place, next to a rapid he had been searching for in the world, one that stretched pulsatingly to the horizon, a ride that continues forever in his mind. He talked about coming back next year and I realized that this great, unknown river wasn't just another expedition; it was the epitome of his life, intertwined with the pulsation of wild water.

The site showcases a wide variety from Saskatchewan, including the meadowlark, killdeer, vesper sparrow, clay-colored sparrow and even the Sprague pipit, an illusory species listed as threatened in Canada since 2000.

Dr. Ryan Fisher, curator of vertebrate zoology at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, is excited for people to immerse themselves in this easily accessible wealth of information.

“The website contains photos of just over 370 species of birds that regularly nest and breed in Canada,” said Dr. Fisher. “It’s live and ready for use and people can try it out right away.”

Additionally, the site has a search engine and a feature that allows the user to compare different eggs on the site, making it an ideal learning tool.

“It's really important for people who work with birds to be able to identify any nests they've found in the course of their work,” he said. “We also think it’s a great resource for researchers if they want to look at things like egg coloration or egg size.”

Fisher cautions that people should not try to scare birds away from their nests to see the eggs, as it is illegal to harass nesting birds in Canada.

“We do this if you happen to come across a bird's nest and want to find out what it is,” Dr. Fisher added.

King, who is producing the film alongside her sister Reina, told Harpar's Baazar that bringing Chisholm's story to a large audience was always part of her motivation to make the film.

“It was always a little disheartening to Reina and I that over the course of our lives so many people didn't know who Shirley Chisholm was,” King said. “What she did was so groundbreaking. She was a real outsider, and you know we use that term all the time, but she was a real first.”

Now that the film is finally finished, King points out that there's no better time to do it Shirley as 2024.

“Rather than trying to release it during a normal cycle, we thought, wouldn't it be more impactful to release it during a presidential election year?” she explains. “As a team, we felt this was probably the best way to honor Shirley: to release her in a space she created for herself.”

Steward Health Care Malta has denied claims it set up a “political support fund” for corporate bribes.

“We have not been asked for or granted any financial favors by any current or former Maltese official or minister and such a fund never existed.” We acquired a concession for a small community hospital at the end of its useful life. a rehabilitation facility in poor condition; and an abandoned, asbestos-contaminated building. “We have also inherited many unexpected liabilities totaling over €60 million,” the company said.

On Sunday it was reported that Joseph Muscat, Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi were suspected of receiving bribes from a €1 million political support fund set up by Steward Health Care.

The Sunday Times of Malta reported that the funds were held by Accutor AG, a Swiss company that received €3.6 million from Steward Healthcare when it took over the 30-year concession of three Maltese state hospitals from Vitals Global Healthcare.

Steward said the original terms of the concession had been described as “unbankable” by the Maltese government itself, the EU and the National Audit Office. It said it had been negotiating in good faith with the government for years to bring the concession into compliance and make it bankable.

“During this time, Steward hired and paid Accutor as a business consultant for a limited period of time. These efforts to regularize the contract were unsuccessful and Steward was left with no choice but to terminate the contract for breach of contract and commence legal proceedings against Malta at the International Court of Arbitration,” it said.

An appeal to the media said Maltese news agencies were “indulging in ridiculous conspiracy theories and conjectures”.

“We also understand that this may be of interest to the judicial inquiry and the courts. It is astonishing that this investigation has taken over four years to conduct and reportedly cost over €10 million, and yet we have not once been asked for information about the contents of this article,” they said. “Steward has always been transparent (all relevant financial information on financial concessions can be found on our website) and we continue to live up to these standards. However, neither the Maltese media nor the courts seem interested in dealing with the facts.”

Muscat, Mizzi and Schembri – along with 16 other defendants – are due to appear in court on May 28 on charges of money laundering, fraud and conspiracy to commit a crime punishable by more than four years in prison. They are also charged with participating in a criminal organization with more than ten members.

Avon officials will meet Monday, May 20 to discuss city/school spending. A public hearing is scheduled for May 28 and a second vote for June 7.

| Updated

AVON, CT – After voters rejected proposed 2024-25 city/school spending plans last week, Avon has reset its budget season, a process that begins Monday, May 20.

On Monday, May 20, the Voters, Finance and Education Committees will host a special budget workshop to address the city/education spending plan that was defeated at the polls last week.

Subscribe to

The event will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the meeting room at Avon Fire Co. #1, 25 Darling Drive and can be accessed virtually via GotoMeeting.

Then officials will finalize a budget proposal to be presented at the May 28 public hearing.

There is no opportunity for public comment during the workshop.

The meeting agenda, with virtual links, will be posted on the Avoin Board of Finance website at www.avonct.gov/board-of-finance.

After the hearing, the full Finance Committee will hold its regular meeting and finalize a spending plan for the second attempt at budget passage.

Last week, voters soundly rejected a $116.09 million city/school budget that would have increased taxes by an average of more than 3 percent. The vote resulted in 299 “yes” votes to 1,378 “no” votes.

Voter turnout exceeded the 9 percent threshold required by the charter for a vote on the budget to be valid. It was 12.4 percent.

How these budgets would have affected individual taxpayers depended on the new assessments following the reassessment.

A tax rate of 30.34 million was proposed for 2024, which is lower than the current tax rate of 35.39 million.

Due to the recently completed reassessment, this does not mean that taxes would have decreased, although the proposed mill rate would have been much lower.

The City of Avon had set up a website that allowed taxpayers to calculate their tax burden based on the 2024-25 budget proposal going to voters.

According to the city, what happens next is determined by city law.

Therefore, a second budget vote will be held on Friday, June 7, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Avon Senior Center, 635 West Avon Road. Absentee ballots will be available at the Avon City Clerk's Office beginning Wednesday, May 29th.

Before that, residents will have another opportunity to comment on the budget at an Avon Board of Finance hearing on Tuesday, May 28, at the Avon Senior Center, 635 West Avon Road, which will be livestreamed via GotoMeeting.

This live stream is available at the following address: or by calling 1-866-899-4679 and entering the access code 708-668-213.

Following the hearing, the Finance Committee will meet to set the budget for the second referendum. This special meeting will be held at the Senior Center and will be livestreamed.

Greg Docherty says he will leave Hull City with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime after his four-year spell at the MKM Stadium comes to an end.

Docherty will leave City this summer after his option year expired and the club decided against offering him new terms, but he is sure his name will forever be etched in Tigers folklore.

The 27-year-old joined from Glasgow Rangers in the summer following City's tumultuous relegation from the Championship and played a starring role in Grant McCann's side winning the club's first title since 1966 and securing an immediate return to the fold as League One winners second league secured.

In total, the popular Scot made 142 appearances in the Black and Amber, scoring seven goals and adding nine assists, but has largely found himself on the sidelines this season under former coach Liam Rosenior.

“After four seasons as a Tiger, it is time to move on to the next chapter of my career,” Docherty wrote on social media. “It is difficult to put into words what a strong bond I have built with this club and the people associated with it during my time here. I came to Hull looking for a new home and a fresh start in my career, and now I'm leaving with a city-born son and real lifelong friendships.

“Winning the league title in 2021 is without a doubt my proudest achievement in football and being able to do it with such great teammates and brilliant staff and create lifelong memories together is something I will always be grateful for.”

“Sometimes football doesn't always go according to plan and whilst last season was undoubtedly very difficult for many reasons, I was still able to take a lot from it and these experiences have made me even hungrier to further my own career in the game.

The interiors are definitely surrounded by the palette, but this Surrey home was inspired by a colorful interior designed by Olivine Design.

Clients, a family with three young children, left London in search of a property and more space. I found this Maison de sept chambres, located in Trenta in a year but requiring renovation.

Image of the nativity scene room with wooden table and chaise longues, motifs and light green walls

Table and chaises à crib, Tongs. Murs à Mizzle, Farrow & Ball. Rideaux, Rapture and Wright.

“I wore clothes because they were spacious and bright,” explained Victoria Gray, co-founder of Olivine Design and Taline Findlater, director of the interior renovation.

“The architecture and proportions of the pieces are great, but they may have a blank slate – they are original or interesting.” » With a mission to bring character and personality into the interior and reflect the family, Olivine Design is for the launch into life with ideas for colored paintings and selected details.

The interior is colored with pink canapés, stools and buffets with lamps

Tapis, Jennifer Manieres. Ottoman, David Seyfried; Tissue Recovery by Christopher Moore L'homme de toile.

“Chez Olivine, we're aiming for the color!” » added Victoria. The new bathroom halls were installed and a large crib room on the coast of the kitchen, which the family could not use, was transformed into a spacious play space.

“It was designed for a reason, but it had to fit the time,” Victoria explained. The color palette is dictated by the owning agency.

Colorful interior with canapé stools and chaise longues

Wall in smoke green, Farrow & Ball. Rideaux, Pierre Frey. Tabouret à pattes de canette, David Seyfried. Canapé Stratford; Chaises Jansen, all of them Kingcome.

“Basically, the majority of the pieces communicate between them and, when not on site, are windows and doors that are located over the garden and the ravine.” We haven't even planned a few isolated individual pieces of our own, explains Victoria .

“We all have to struggle with the others, which are crucial to the conception of the footwear.” » Own, calm and fresh shades on the chosen squares, with accents of roses, blue and red, with touches of green and green , for a feeling of cohesion.

The interior of the bathroom is colored with paper and mirror motifs

Wallpaper La Pannonie, Pierre Frey. Lambris en Bancha, Farrow and Ball. Le bassin Single Ladybower ; Appliques, pockets Drummond .

“The pieces are very bright and we don’t want to plunge them into deep darkness,” Victoria explained. “Colourful accents on furniture and fabrics.” Because the fabric in the pieces shines, they are not dramatic, they look wonderful.

The huge salon, for example, presents delicate pink marbles with yellow, blue and red tones, and these colors are reflected in the precious flowers. “It’s a rare piece of this size that I can share with furniture,” Victoria explained.

Colored interior room with double lighting, bed cover and duvet with different motifs

Murs and green olive clair, Natural Painting by Edward Bulmer. Tête de lit, Tissus Bennison.

It touches on games, a young family, including a bold red paint and a carpet on the party walls, going back to the details of the party console. The salon's blue is enhanced and enhanced by comfort – the preferred piece of customers – more than Olivine Design, a choice for a particularly deep complexion.

“The double coin got all the way to the source in front of us before it went dark, and we were happy about the way it worked,” Victoria explained. “Since there is no color that customers have naturally chosen, we opted for quality, with touches of yellow on the chaise longues and orange accents on the rideaux.” »

The interior of the bathroom is colored with green water and ocher wall

Murs en Cannelle, Natural Painting by Edward Bulmer. Lumière, Corston. panier, Conception d'olivine.

Modern pieces guarantee a transitional style. In the kitchen, for example, on a loving decoration, a monastic table and clear, white chaise longues. “The client didn’t want it to be modern, expensive or antique,” Victoria explained.

Over time, the mantel tables suggest a contemporary touch to the room. The detailed studies are directed inward, as the Têtes de Lit Florales extend beyond the rooms and the festive rides are placed in the baby's room or in the wardrobes on the sideboards that make up the wall of the playroom. We guarantee everyone will be extremely enthusiastic about this family home. with character.

Russia and China offer condolences after death of Iranian president – POLITICS https://breakingheadline.lighting/russia-and-china-offer-condolences-after-death-of-iranian-president-politics/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/russia-and-china-offer-condolences-after-death-of-iranian-president-politics/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:01:13 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/russia-and-china-offer-condolences-after-death-of-iranian-president-politics/

“As true friends of Russia, he made an invaluable personal contribution to the office of good business relations between us both and made great efforts to achieve leverage at the level of strategic partnership,” he said in Poutine's letter, published on the Internet des website Kremlin.

“I had the chance to meet Ebrahim Raisi and I remembered him all the days as the most wonderful person,” the letter said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Wenbin's probation officer told a news conference that Raisi's death “posed a great risk to the Iranian people and the Chinese people for a good friend.”

The Iranian regime is a strategic ally of Moscow and Beijing. EU officials recently accused them of rewarding the Russians with ballistic missiles for their invasion of Ukraine. The Chinese are an Iranian prosecutor who remembers the prosecution's battle with Israel and those responsible for Western state affairs.

Tensions are rising in the region after Iran changed its missile firing targets with Israel last month and bombed the Iranian embassy in Syria. The Iranian representatives who blessed a small Bedouin in September came under direct attack against the Israeli people for the first time.

Iran is an ardent partisan of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, designated a terrorist organization in the United Kingdom, European Union and United States, which insults Israeli forces in the Gaza enclave. Iran also armed and financed the Lebanese Hezbollah group and the Houthis rebels in Yemen, who continued to lead two air strikes against Israel.

On the sidelines of the Semaine Nationale de la sécurité nautique, the Société de s'auvetage has teamed up with the LG2 agency to launch a new awareness campaign.

This initiative consists of making the plaisancier conscious. There is no risk of not wearing the vest of an individual fleet. Distributed on television and on social media, the 30-second message hit the stage, on a musical stage, a plaisan that amused with death littérale. I present to the public the ridiculousness of risking the water without a life jacket.

“This year our organization sent a message: ‘On the water without vests, you are facing death,’” noted Raynald Hawkins, general manager of the Société de Sauvetage, in a statement. It may be that it is no longer clear. Last year, September 9-10, the victims of the Canadian crossing were unable to commit their personal fleet vest or the false fate.”

“As the awareness message was already echoing in the city, the true master of the spirit was the head of creation of LG2 Frédéric Tremblay. With this new campaign, I sought to adopt a bold approach that delved into the codes of traditional awareness advertising that I had acquired over time, giving me a tone plus outrageousness and playfulness.

Note that the campaign may be funded by the financier of Transports Canada's Maritime Transportation Safety Contribution Program and in collaboration with Nautisme Québec. (NP)

The video, which shows the incident occurred on Thursday, shows the child leaving his home, walking onto the sidewalk and stopping as a school bus approaches on Jeanne-Mance Street in the Plateau-Mont-Royal district approaches.

There is a bike path between the car lane and the sidewalk where the little girl is standing.

As soon as the school bus stops, the child starts jumping on the road to catch the bus. As she begins to cross the bike path, a cyclist bumps into her.

The child was not seriously injured. The video shows an adult helping the child after the collision and bringing him home.

In its own post, advocacy group Vélo Québec said: “The road safety regulations are clear.”

“A cyclist must stop for the flashing red light or school bus stop sign. End of story,” the post says.

This illustration on the Quebec government website shows how all road users, including cyclists, must stay at least five meters away from a school bus once it has activated its flashing lights and stop sign. This rule does not apply if a median separates a road user from the school bus. When a school activates its red flashing lights and stop sign, all road users must stop, whether they are following or facing the bus.

According to the Quebec government, road users cannot meet or pass the school bus until the red flashing lights are turned off, the stop signal has been withdrawn and the person driving or cycling is certain that they can continue driving safely.

Students uncover security flaw that could allow millions to do their laundry for free

Two UC Santa Cruz students found a major security flaw in CSC ServiceWorks washing machines.

Over a million internet-connected washing machines in homes, hotels and colleges worldwide are affected by the bug, which allows people to operate them for free.

The students who discovered it, Alexander Sherbrooke and Iakov Taranenko, reported it earlier this year. Despite their attempts, CSC ServiceWorks has not fixed the vulnerability, leaving the system vulnerable.

ANYRUN malware sandbox’s 8th Birthday Special Offer: Grab 6 Months of Free Service

A “Eureka” moment in the basement

The discovery occurred in early January when Sherbrooke was sitting with his laptop on the floor of his basement laundry room.

He started a laundry cycle without finances by executing a script.

The machine responded immediately and was ready to wash a free load of clothes.

The students demonstrated the weakness by setting a fictitious multimillion-dollar balance on one of their laundry accounts, which appeared normal on the CSC Go mobile app.

According to Techcrunch's findings, this discovery reveals a serious flaw in the API of CSC's mobile app, which allows apps and devices to communicate online.

Lack of response from CSC ServiceWorks

After several phone calls and online contact form messages, CSC ignored the children's complaints.

They also contacted Carnegie Mellon University's CERT Coordinating Center, which helps providers report security issues.

The students waited over three months to release their results because they thought CSC would fix the problem.

The unpatched vulnerability still exists. This month, the researchers presented their findings to their university's cybersecurity club, highlighting the risks associated with connecting heavy devices to the Internet and their vulnerability to attacks.

Technology providers like CSC must implement security controls, Sherbrooke and Taranenko said.

The app on the user's mobile phone performs security checks that are automatically trusted by the CSC servers. Therefore, they discovered that they could trick CSC servers into approving account balance changes.

Future risks and impacts

According to the researchers, this vulnerability could lead to overheating and fires if safety restrictions are ignored.

To start a cycle, the washing machine's start button must be pressed, although the settings can also be changed remotely.

The error could not be resolved because CSC ServiceWorks discreetly deleted the researchers' incorrect account balance after they reported their findings.

Taranenko wondered how a large organization could make such mistakes without providing the ability to report security risks.
Despite the silence, the students continue their investigation.

Taranenko emphasized the relevance of real-world security research and offered help to companies with security concerns.

As the vulnerability remains open, researchers hope that CSC ServiceWorks will take immediate action to protect its systems and prevent exploitation.

Wild breed shows potential for developing drought-resistant potatoes: researchers https://breakingheadline.lighting/wild-breed-shows-potential-for-developing-drought-resistant-potatoes-researchers-2/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/wild-breed-shows-potential-for-developing-drought-resistant-potatoes-researchers-2/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 10:42:01 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/wild-breed-shows-potential-for-developing-drought-resistant-potatoes-researchers-2/

About 50 of the most promising clones will be transferred to the department's breeding program in Fredericton for further study.

Richelyn Fabian, a 17-year-old resident of Fort McMurray, Alta., and her family are trying to live as normal a life as possible — even going to the park. But she made sure her four children packed their travel bags and that dry goods and water were stocked at home.

The regional community of Wood Buffalo is under evacuation alert as a wildfire burns 16 kilometers southwest of Fort McMurray in northwestern Alberta. Residents do not have to leave, but they must be willing to leave.

For Fabian, the situation brings back memories of the 2016 forest fire. This fire, known as “The Beast,” forced more than 90,000 people to evacuate the region and destroyed 2,400 homes and businesses. According to the federal disaster database, it is the second costliest Canadian disaster ever.

“It sucks to be in this situation again,” Fabian told CBC News on Saturday.

“It’s Mother Nature. There is actually nothing, we can do so much. So just prepare and stay alert.”

Alberta Wildfire is reporting a total of 49 active wildfires as of 3:15 p.m. MT Sunday, including seven mutual aid fires. Mutual aid designation occurs when Alberta Wildfire assists in fighting fires but is not the lead agency.

Environment and climate change Canada has issued air quality statements for most of Alberta, largely due to wildfire smoke coming from northeastern British Columbia. Some areas are affected by local wildfires.

Two wildfires in Alberta are considered out of control, including the one near Fort McMurray, which more than tripled in size overnight.

Alberta Wildfire estimates the fire is approximately 5,500 hectares in size. On Saturday morning it was around 1,500 hectares.

Firefighters observed extreme wind speeds and extreme fire behavior Saturday, but the flames were moved southeast, away from the community, said Melissa Story, a public information officer for Alberta Wildfire.

“Now it's skipping the southern part of the city and heading south,” Story said on CBC Radio Daybreak Alberta Sunday morning.

Although the fire grew significantly within 24 hours, fire suppression efforts were successful overnight in the northeast portion of the wildfire, according to Story.

Alberta Wildfire does not expect the fire to expand much Sunday as winds are expected to ease and shift to the northwest, pushing flames toward the currently burned area, Story said.

The fire was moving toward Highway 63, but the change in wind direction stopped that, said Josee St-Onge, another public information officer for Alberta Wildfire. The fire is about 12 kilometers from the highway.

Sunday's focus will be on the southeast side, Alberta Wildfire officials told CBC News. Six fire-fighting teams and 13 helicopters are in action. An incident management team will be added to the force on Sunday and air tankers will be available if necessary.

Heavy equipment groups will continue to work to establish fire cover in the northeast portion of the fire, St-Onge said.

The regional community of Wood Buffalo – including the settlements of Fort McMurray, Fort McMurray First Nation, Anzac, Saprae Creek and Gregoire Lake, as well as Rickards Landing Industrial Park – is still under evacuation alert.

Julia Soucie is among the residents ensuring they are ready to evacuate if the alarm escalates into an evacuation order.

Soucie went shopping on Saturday to make sure there were enough snacks for her two children, she said, and filled her vehicle with gas – noting that the first gas station she tried was out of fuel.

After experiencing the 2016 wildfire, she felt more prepared this time, which helped ease some fears, she said.

“I’m not done yet,” Soucie said of her preparation. “I’ll finish packing and maybe get some gas, just in case.”

Soucie said she is trying her best to stay informed about the situation online and through social media.

St-Onge understands that some residents are nervous, but assures that Alberta Wildfire is doing everything in its power to ensure that 2016 is not repeated.

“This year we are better prepared. The temperatures are also cooler and there is a favorable wind shift,” she said.

“All of this helps us move forward.”

Wildfire near Grande Prairie continues east

The other out-of-control fire in Grande Prairie County in northwestern Alberta has grown to about 1,400 hectares as of 1 p.m. Sunday.

The fire, located about four kilometres east of Teepee Creek, jumped the Smoky River on Saturday and burned about 80 hectares on the east side of the river, according to Alberta Wildfire. But the flames are moving east, away from surrounding communities.

Overall, Saturday's smoky atmosphere helped contain the fire's activity and crews were able to establish a watch around the fire, she said.

No helicopters could fly on Saturday, but they should be in the air on Sunday, she said.

Because this wildfire is classified as mutual aid, Alberta Wildfire is working with Grande Prairie County and Greenview Borough officials to combat it.

“Sometimes these smaller communities aren't able to fight a wildfire because it's such a big deal that a fire truck might not be able to put it out,” she said.

“So we’re here to help and we definitely want to support whatever’s going on out there.”

Grande Prairie RCMP issued a news release Sunday reminding residents to heed evacuation orders in effect for some residents in the area.

The order for Grande Prairie County covers the area from Kleskun Creek to Township Road 742, between Highway 733 and Smoky River, including the Riverstone Golf Course.

In Greenview Township, the North Goodwin area west of Range Road 21 between Township Roads 734 to 741 is affected.

Local firefighters told CBC News 17 homes in the area were evacuated Friday.

Edmonton activates response to poor air quality

Environment and climate change Canada's Air Quality Health Index, which measures how safe the air is, suggests smoke is severely affecting large parts of Alberta.

The index shows the air in many communities, including Edmonton, is rated as “very risky.”

Air quality in Alberta's capital is expected to remain at “very high risk” through Monday evening and is then expected to improve.

The City of Edmonton issued a news release Sunday afternoon saying it had activated its extreme weather response due to poor air quality. It should apply until Tuesday, 9 a.m., but could be extended.

People can enter open city facilities such as libraries and recreation centers if they need a break from the smoke, the release said.

The city will distribute N95 masks to social partners as needed to help protect residents from smoke inhalation, the release said.

Edmontonians should take precautions to limit their exposure, such as keeping all windows and doors closed, the release said.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — A fourth Indian citizen living in Canada has been charged in the killing of a Sikh separatist leader last June that was the subject of a diplomatic dispute with India.

British Columbia's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said in a news release late Saturday that 22-year-old Amandeep Singh was already in the custody of Peel Regional Police in Ontario on unrelated firearms charges.

“IHIT investigated the evidence and gathered enough information for the British Columbia Crown Prosecution Service to charge Amandeep Singh with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder,” the police statement said.

Police also confirmed that Singh is an Indian citizen who splits his time in Canada in Brampton, Ontario; Surrey, British Columbia; and Abbotsford, British Columbia.

According to investigators, no further details of the arrest can be released due to ongoing investigations and legal proceedings.

Earlier this month, police arrested three Indian nationals – Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh and Karanpreet Singh – in Edmonton and charged them with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was shot in the parking lot of the Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia, where he was president.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sparked a diplomatic feud with India in September when he said there were “credible allegations” of Indian involvement in the killing of Nijjar.

India had accused Nijjar of links to terrorism but angrily denied involvement in the killing. In response to the allegations, India last year asked Canada to withdraw 41 of its 62 diplomats in the country. Tensions remain, but have since eased somewhat.

A spokesman for the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Temple protesters gathered outside Surrey provincial court last Tuesday as the three men charged in the case appeared via video link.

The arrests have heightened scrutiny of Canada's approval process for international students after it was revealed that a video posted online in 2019 by an India-based immigration consulting firm showed Brar saying his “study visa had arrived” while a photo showed him doing something held up what looked like a study permit visa.

When asked about the suspects' immigration status, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said it could not comment on ongoing investigations or individual cases.

Callinex Doubles Size of Pine Bay Project with Acquisition of Highly Prospective Exploration Land Package in Manitoba https://breakingheadline.lighting/callinex-doubles-size-of-pine-bay-project-with-acquisition-of-highly-prospective-exploration-land-package-in-manitoba/ https://breakingheadline.lighting/callinex-doubles-size-of-pine-bay-project-with-acquisition-of-highly-prospective-exploration-land-package-in-manitoba/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 10:36:48 +0000 https://breakingheadline.lighting/callinex-doubles-size-of-pine-bay-project-with-acquisition-of-highly-prospective-exploration-land-package-in-manitoba/

Highlights:

  • Acquired and staked ground consolidates the largest felsic volcanic rock package in the Flin Flon Greenstone Belt, the host rock for the majority of the historic copper/gold/zinc/silver VMS mines in the Flin Flon and Snow Lake regions;
  • Newly acquired ground hosts one gold deposit and a relatively recently interpreted growth fault corridor known to control and host at least two historic near-surface copper-rich VMS deposits and numerous Cu-Zn VMS occurrences;

VANCOUVER, BC, May 20, 2024 /CNW/ – Callinex Mines Inc.
